I just watched a Youtube video 5 Signs the Apocalypse which was posted by a Youtuber “Dark5”. I’ll issue a disclaimer that I am not Dark5, I do not believe he or she is in any way associated with Cynics4bettertomorrow, nor are we associated with Dark5.
The video presents 5 of the more likely ways that human kind or life on earth could cease in the near future.
1) AI Weapons
2) ISIS
3) Colony Collapse
4) Post-antibiotic era
5) Methane Clathrate
I have discussed AI (Artificial intelligence) weapons, and have mentioned that Stephen Hawking is concerned about these too. I have discussed colony collapse of honeybees, or other problems with honeybees triggering a famine which could kill billions. I have talked a lot about superbugs and the post-antibiotic era.
ISIS, even with their stated goal to meet and defeat the Armies of Rome, I do not think that ISIS is much of a major threat to human kind. Although, it could become one if they get WMDs and hurl them around, and start a war among the major world powers.
What I did not know was the severity of Methane Clathrate. I knew that the feedback loops were serious, as was the release of methane from the polar regions, and I know that has sped up some scientists’ predictions for how soon human extinction will occur. Some predictions are that the world will warm to a point of uninhability by 2020 - a mere 5 years from now, and many more are talking about 2030. (Update: January 13, 2017: I have been to the Arctic personally since writing this blog. Indeed, the situation up there is DIRE. Nothing I'd read previously prepared me for the situation I saw before my eyes, and learned more of by talking to the Inuit.)
There are roughly 1000 gigatons of frozen methane. If this melts, they talk about a “Clathrate Gun” runaway chain reaction, in which the frozen methane from the arctic/antarctic would cause enough global warming to melt and release the 10,000 gigatons of frozen methane on ocean floors. These two would raise global temperatures by 30C - well beyond what life on earth could handle. Sure, a few of the wealthy could possibly maintain their environment for a few years, but global warming would continue, eventually causing the earth to have an envoronment similar to that of Venus.
